  • Most likely if you're looking at this 12" you're already familiar with what Beak> is all about. That given, let's plunge into whether the "Wulfstan" record is worth a purchase. First off, the live cuts on here are worth it in themselves, as most people know the Beak> album itself was recorded in one session to have a true, live feel, so this is like getting alternate versions/interpretations of tracks you already like. No loud crowd noises to ruin the sound (just a slight clap or shout heard near the beginning or end of a cut). Most importantly is the title track, "Wulfstan". Listen to the YouTube sample if it's still valid for yourself. This is one of the edgiest songs by Beak> in existence. With predominant electric guitar driving the track and strong tambourine hit, the typically afterthought nature of the droning vocals become a perfect marriage. I can't emphasize enough how great a record this is, and what a timeless act Beak> is in general. I never thought Geoff Barrow could top his Portishead project, but Beak> has proven me wrong.
